The day after Halloween might not have been the best day to deliver a message of avoiding candy, but for Oxnard dentist Shalabh Puri, spreading the message of good oral hygiene is important every day.
"They should be giving their candy to mom," Puri said. "Lots of studies being done show oral health of the teeth and gums is directly related to medical health."
Puri is one of 14 dentists who provide free services to the Head Start program, which is offered at 27 centers in Ventura County through Childhood Development Resources. On Tuesday, he visited three Head Start centers along with three staff members and his son, Anish Puri, 16, a senior at Oak Park High School.
The centers offer a preschool program that includes math, language, art, music and outdoor activities. Yolanda Salazar, Head Start resources manager, said oral hygiene and dental health also are emphasized in the program, which is available to young children whose family incomes fall within federal poverty guidelines.
Shalabh Puri, who lives in Oak Park, said Oxnard was the right place to establish his dental practice more than 20 years ago.
"I used to work in Thousand Oaks. I was looking for a practice in Ventura County, and this seemed like a good opportunity. I like the community, and I wanted to be associated with it," he said.
Puri said his childhood in India made him conscious of extreme poverty. As he succeeded in his practice, he felt he should give back to the community.
"What we call poverty here isn't poverty there. But people are people wherever you are. There's a sense of giving and doing well to give back. You learn that everybody is the same and we all have the same aspirations," he said.
